Good Samaritan Laws have been effected in all the states to protect the lay rescuer from liability in efforts to rescue a person with sudden cardiac arrest. When using an AED, though the regulations vary somewhat, but most have the following elements:

1) The AED should be checked on a manufacturer recommended schedule (usually monthly)

2) Would-be rescuers should be trained in some level of CPR training by state recognized authorities (Usually American Heart Association and Red Cross)

3) Emergency Medical Services should be notified of the presence of the AED

4) Medical supervision should be obtained.

5) A record should be kept of any events
